美国科罗拉多大学波尔德分校最近的一项研究发现，由于近期洛基山脉积雪变薄，导致森林土壤中的二氧化碳（CO2）释放到大气中的速度相应减慢。作为2006年2月9日出版的《自然》杂志上一篇相关论文的主要作者，他指出：“由于土壤释放CO2的速度减慢，冬天森林里的湿气变得稀薄，这为春、夏时期树木的生长带来压力，同时还限制了它们在生长季节需要大量吸收的CO2的数量。”
