通过图位克隆鉴定了控制开发花蕾的ob1基因，是位于D13染色体上的MIXTA-like MYB基因，解释了ob2位点的因果变异。运用全基因组转录组分析技术，发现ob突变体中部分MYB基因和细胞壁生物发生、毛状体分化、细胞分裂素信号转导和细胞分裂的相关基因受到抑制，花瓣生长可能因此受到抑制。
系统鉴定和分析了棉花SUN家族蛋白，通过病毒诱导的敲除和CRISPR/cas9介导的GbSUN5敲除，发现尽管花粉活力仍然正常，但是其败育率较高。本研究结果表明：SUN3和SUN5在生物学功能上存在差异，在生殖发育中发挥重要作用。
