第三极是地球上除了南极和北极之外冰川分布最多的地区（总面积约10万km2），随着气候快速变暖，冰川的加速消融引发了人们对下游农业、生态和社会供水的担忧。然而，冰川融水的重要性在第三极各个流域并不一致。第三极超过50%以上的冰川集中分布在西天山-帕米尔-喀剌昆仑-兴都库什-西喜马拉雅山。相较位于青藏高原东南部主要受季风影响的流域（如黄河源、澜沧江-湄公河上游等），冰雪融水对受西风主导且下游干旱的西部...
受全球气候变暖影响，青藏高原及周边地区的大部分冰川发生明显退缩，但西北部冰川相对稳定甚至个别冰川在前进，被称为“喀喇昆仑异常”。尽管青藏高原西北部降水稀少，但依靠较强的冰川融水补给，湖泊出现明显扩张。为了更深入理解青藏高原西北部冰川和湖泊同步扩张的现象，有必要进一步研究地质历史时期该区域冰川发育与湖泊变化的关系。
