形态特征：多年生草本植物，根状茎有葡枝，茎直立，高30-70厘米。基部叶在花期枯萎，茎部叶倒披针形或倒卵状矩圆形，顶端钝或尖，上部叶缘具齿或羽状分裂；上部叶小，全缘。全部叶稍薄质，近无毛。头状花序单生于枝端并排列成疏伞房状，总苞半球形，苞片2-3层覆瓦状排列，舌状花1层，15-20个，舌片浅紫色，管状花被短密毛。瘦果倒卵状矩圆形，褐色，极扁。花期5-9月，果期8-10月。
形态特征：多年生半灌木状草本，高80-150厘米，茎褐色，具棱，多分枝，全株香气浓烈。叶卵形至长卵形，一回浅裂至二回羽状深裂，叶面叶背被绒毛。总状花序或圆锥花序卵形，生于顶部，总苞3-4层，花序托小，凸起，雌花4-8朵，花冠狭管状，檐部紫红色，具2-3裂齿，两性花8-12朵，花冠管状，檐部紫色。瘦果长圆形或倒卵形。花果期8-10月。本种植株表现变化大，在同一地区不同生境都有不同株型。
