以作物矮化育种为标志的“绿色革命”使世界作物产量大幅度提高。但矮秆品种一般存在氮肥利用效率降低的缺点，其产量对化肥投入的依赖性很高。过高的氮肥投入不仅增加种植成本，还会造成环境污染。如何突破作物高产和氮高效协同改良的育种瓶颈，实现在减少氮肥投入的前提下提高作物产量，已成为当前农业可持续发展亟待解决的重大问题。
