在自然界中,种子在土壤中萌发后,将迅速穿破土层获取光照进行光合作用等生理活动。此时,幼苗下胚轴或茎迅速伸长,双子叶植物的子叶闭合并形成弯钩,以克服出土的压力。幼苗出土见光后,下胚轴或茎的伸长受到抑制、弯钩打开、子叶张开、叶绿体发育完善并合成叶绿素,进行光合作用。土壤下的暗形态建成和见光后的光形态建成是大多数种子植物所必须经历的生长发育过程。
